About Esomeprazole 20mg Tablets

What Is Esomeprazole?

Esomeprazole is a medicine called a Proton Pump Inhibitor. It reduces the amount of acid produced by your stomach, which can prevent irritation, heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion and ulcer pain in adults. It also allows the stomach and food pipe to heal from existing ulcers.

Can I Use Esomeprazole?

Most can take Esomeprazole. If you’re due for an endoscopy, you may have to stop taking Esomeprazole for a while before your examination. You may also not be able to take it at all if you have liver problems. Speak to your prescriber for advice before taking Esomeprazole.

Is Esomeprazole Sold Under Other Brand Names?

Yes, Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in many popular brands, including Nexium, Nexium Control, Emozul, Guardium Acid Reflux Control and Ventra. Because it’s the same ingredient, it works the same way, regardless of the brand name or packaging.

How Does Esomeprazole Work?

Esomeprazole is part of the class of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). These block the proton pumps that produce acid in your stomach, and stop them from creating as much acid. Reducing the acid levels in your stomach can prevent further damage to your food pipe and stomach, allowing them to heal naturally over time.

How To Use Esomeprazole

How you should use Esomeprazole depends on the condition you’ve been prescribed it for. Your prescriber will advise you how much to take, but typically you take it once a day.

Ingredients

Esomeprazole Gastro-resistant Tablets come in two strengths containing 20 mg or 40 mg of the active ingredient esomeprazole (as esomeprazole magnesium).

For a full list of ingredients, please see the Patient Information Leaflet contained within the product packaging.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Esomeprazole can cause side effects. Common ones include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation,
  • Wind (flatulence)
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Benign polyps in the stomach

Esomeprazole can also hide the symptoms of some other diseases, so you should report any unusual side effects to your prescriber as soon as possible.

Warnings

PPIs like Esomeprazole can slightly increase your risk of developing a hip, wrist, or spine fracture, particularly if you’re taking it for longer than a year. Always let your prescriber know if you have osteoporosis or are taking medicines that can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Esomeprazole can interact with how other medications work, so let your prescriber know if you take anything else, including over-the-counter medicines.
