About Omeprazole 20mg
Omeprazole 20mg is a type of medication called a proton pump inhibitor. It’s available as an oral capsule, so you take it by mouth. It works by reducing the amount of acid that your stomach makes. It is used to treat conditions including acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and indigestion. If you have GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), which is where acid can flow back from your stomach to your throat, our clinicians may recommend Omeprazole to help deal with symptoms like heartburn. Omeprazole is suitable for adults over the age of 18.
How Does Omeprazole Work?
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. Proton pumps are a type of enzyme in your stomach that helps make acid to digest food more easily. Omeprazole stops these enzymes from working as effectively, so your body produces less acid. Reducing stomach acid helps ease symptoms like acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. Less acid means less irritation to your food pipe and stomach. Omeprazole begins working within two to three days, but it can take up to four weeks to fully relieve your symptoms.
Omeprazole alternatives
Antacids, such as Gaviscon and Rennie, are over-the-counter medicines that provide effective short-term relief from heartburn and indigestion and can be taken as required. Antacids are alkali liquids or tablets that are designed to neutralise stomach acid. A dose can often provide quick relief.
Lansoprazole is an alternative prescription-only treatment that works in a very similar way to Omeprazole, and is suitable for people who suffer from frequent or persistent heartburn or indigestion. Alternatively, Ranitidine and Famotidine also work to reduce stomach acid, but have slightly different mechanisms of action.
Full details on all available treatments can be found over on the Acid Reflux & Heartburn Advice page.
How To Take Omeprazole
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has advised. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about how to take it. Generally, the recommended dose of Omeprazole is 20mg once a day, in the morning, on an empty stomach or with food.
The length of time you can take Omeprazole depends on what condition it’s treating. It varies from one week to eight weeks or even longer in some cases. Your prescriber will determine how long you should take it for. It’s important to follow the prescribed instructions.
If you don't notice an improvement in your symptoms within a few days, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist for further advice. For full instructions on how to take Omeprazole, please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Omeprazole capsules is omeprazole 20mg. This is the ingredient that helps reduce stomach acid production. Other ingredients work together to ensure that the capsule can work effectively. These include, inside the capsule, hypromellose, maize starch, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer (1:1) dispersion 30% (sodium lauryl sulphate, polysorbate 80, methacrylic acid-ethyl acrylate copolymer), disodium phosphate dihydrate, sucrose, talc, triethyl citrate, and titanium dioxide (E-171).
The capsule itself is made of gelatine and titanium dioxide (E-171), and the printing ink ingredients are potassium hydroxide, strong ammonia solution, propylene glycol, shellac, and black iron oxide (E-172).
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Omeprazole can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.
Some of the common side effects of Omeprazole include headache, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, wind, nausea or vomiting. Less common ones may include dizziness, insomnia, skin rashes, feeling sleepy, or swelling of the ankles. Rare but serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, liver problems, or skin blistering.
If you get sudden wheezing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin rash, stop taking Omeprazole and seek medical help immediately.
Warnings
Omeprazole isn’t recommended for anyone under the age of 18. If you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in Omeprazole, you shouldn’t take it. There are also drug interactions you should be aware of. Tell your prescriber if you take any other medications so they can make sure it’s safe for you to take Omeprazole. Some of the medications that might interact with Omeprazole include nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection), diazepam, St John’s wort, blood thinners, and some chemotherapy drugs. There are many others, so always let our clinicians know of any other medicines you take, whether they be prescription or over the counter.
If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to get pregnant, speak to your prescribing clinician before taking Omeprazole. Taking Omeprazole in these cases is generally considered safe, but our clinicians can provide personalised advice.
For a full list of warnings, please see the Patient Information Leaflet contained within the product packaging.

Omeprazole 20mg FAQs
What Symptoms Does Omeprazole Treat?
Omeprazole helps treat a range of stomach and digestive conditions. These include a burning feeling in your chest or throat (heartburn), a sour or bitter taste in your mouth, and the feeling of food coming back up after eating. It can also relieve pain or discomfort in your stomach, bloating, burping, and feeling fullness or heaviness after meals.
Omeprazole is often used for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where acid from your stomach travels up into your throat, causing heartburn and inflammation. It also treats ulcers in the stomach and small intestine, including those associated with a bacterial infection called Helicobacter pylori. If you have these ulcers, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics alongside Omeprazole. It can also be used to treat or prevent ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and to manage a rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which is where your stomach makes too much acid.
How Long Does Omeprazole Take To Work?
You may start to feel the benefits of Omeprazole within a few hours, but it can take one to four days to feel the full effect. This is because it takes time to reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes. To get the best results, you should try to take Omeprazole at the same time every day. Even if your symptoms seem to get better, you should keep taking it as prescribed unless your prescriber tells you otherwise.
What Is The Difference Between Omeprazole and Lansoprazole?
Both Omeprazole and Lansoprazole are commonly prescribed to treat acid reflux. However, some studies suggest that Lansoprazole is faster-acting than Omeprazole, meaning that if it is taken reactively (as soon as symptoms start to appear) it could help ease the effects quite rapidly.
This could be partly down to the difference in dosages between the two drugs. Omeprazole is typically prescribed in 20mg doses, while Lansoprazole is prescribed in 30mg capsules.
Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Omeprazole?
It’s generally not recommended to drink alcohol while taking Omeprazole. Alcohol can make your stomach produce more acid than normal, which can reduce how well the medicine works. This means you may not get as much relief from symptoms like heartburn or acid reflux. Even small amounts of alcohol could impact this, and so it’s best to avoid alcohol altogether while taking Omeprazole.
Can I Take Omeprazole After Eating?
Some people don’t experience the effects of acid reflux/heartburn until after they have eaten. Because of this, they might not take Omeprazole as a preventative measure, but instead take it after food, when the symptoms have already begun. This isn’t recommended, and if you are prescribed Omeprazole, your prescriber will advise you to take it either on an empty stomach or with food.
However, if you do take it after eating, you should make sure you don’t lie down straight away, to avoid making your symptoms worse. You should begin to experience relief from the symptoms within an hour or two.
Who Takes Omeprazole At Night?
You would normally take Omeprazole in the mornings, but if you have severe acid reflux or nocturnal acid reflux symptoms (symptoms during the night), your prescriber may decide a nighttime dose is right for you. Taking Omeprazole before bed may help reduce acid levels while you sleep. Always follow the advice given to you by our experienced clinical team.
Can I Take Omeprazole And Gaviscon Together?
Yes, you can take both if you need to, but you should leave a two-hour gap between them. Gaviscon is an antacid that gets to work quickly, tackling the symptoms of acid reflux immediately. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor, and so it works over time to reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces. It can be useful to take both while you’re waiting for Omeprazole to work fully, but you should always listen to medical advice.
Will Omeprazole Affect My Contraception?
Omeprazole isn’t known to affect any type of regular contraception, including the combined pill. However, it could reduce the effectiveness of one particular type of emergency contraception called ellaOne (ulipristal). If you need emergency contraception, you should ask for a different type.
Can Lifestyle Changes Help With Acid Reflux?
Yes, making simple lifestyle changes can help with acid reflux. Avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods can help reduce symptoms. Raising the head of your bed slightly may stop acid from coming up while you sleep. If you often get symptoms at night, avoid eating for three hours before you go to bed. Maintaining a healthy weight by eating healthily can help, as can cutting down on caffeinated drinks, alcohol and smoking.
