Zolmitriptan 5mg Nasal Spray Summary
Zolmitriptan 5mg Nasal Spray information
What Is Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray?
Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray is a prescription medicine used to treat migraine headaches in adults. It contains zolmitriptan, a type of medicine called a triptan, that is absorbed through the lining of your nose.
Migraine symptoms may be linked to widened blood vessels in the brain. Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray helps to reduce this widening, which can ease headache pain and other symptoms such as feeling or being sick and sensitivity to light and sound.
Can I Use Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray?
Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray is for adults who have been diagnosed with migraine. It is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18, or for people over 65.
Do not use it if you have high blood pressure, have ever had heart problems, or have had a stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Do not use it at the same time as other triptan medicines or ergot-type migraine medicines.
How Is Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray Different From Other Migraine Medications?
Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray delivers zolmitriptan through the lining of your nose rather than through your stomach.
This can be helpful if:
- You feel sick or vomit during a migraine attack
- You prefer not to take tablets when you have a headache
How To Take Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray
Always use your spray as instructed by your prescribing pharmacist.
- Blow your nose gently before use.
- Remove the protective cover from the nozzle.
- Hold the applicator with your fingers on the finger grip and your thumb on the plunger.
- Close one nostril with a finger and place the nozzle into the other nostril as far as feels comfortable.
- Tilt your head back slightly and close your mouth.
- Breathe in gently through your nose and press the plunger firmly with your thumb.
- Keep your head slightly tilted back and breathe gently through your mouth for 5 to 10 seconds.
- You may feel liquid inside your nose. This is normal and does not mean the dose has been lost.
Ingredients
Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient zolmitriptan. This belongs to a group of medicines called triptans, which are used to treat migraine. Each single-use nasal spray unit contains 5mg of zolmitriptan.
Side Effects
As with any medicine, you may notice side effects, though not everyone gets them. Mild changes to taste are common and pass quickly. Other side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, tingling, a warm sensation and nasal irritation. If you experience an irregular heartbeat or severe allergic reaction, stop taking it and seek medical help.
Stop using Zolmitriptan Nasal Spray and seek medical help straight away if you notice signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, or a raised, itchy rash), chest pain or shortness of breath, severe stomach pain or bloody diarrhoea, or any sudden stroke-like symptoms.
Warnings
Don’t use Zolmitriptan if you’re allergic to zolmitriptan or any of the other ingredients. Similarly, don’t use it if you have a history of stroke, high blood pressure, heart conditions like angina or are taking other migraine medications. Speak to a healthcare professional first if you have had liver problems, experience headaches unlike your normal migraines or take antidepressants.
For all warnings, side effects and ingredients, please see the Patient Information Leaflet contained within your product packaging.
