About Zomig 2.5mg Tablets

What Is Zomig 2.5mg?

Zomig is a prescription medication used for the treatment of migraine attacks and cluster headaches. It’s part of a class of medicines called Triptans which work to reduce widened blood vessels in your head. This can ease migraine and headache pain, as well as reduce other symptoms linked to migraines like sensitivity to light and sound, and nausea.

Can I Use Zomig?

Zomig is suitable for adults between the ages of 18 and 65. It’s not suitable for you if you:

  • are allergic to zolmitriptan or any other ingredients
  • have high blood pressure
  • have ever had heart issues
  • have had a stroke
  • are taking any other medicines for migraine

If you’re not sure if you can use Zomig, the consultation with a licensed pharmacist will help advise you.

Is Zomig The Same As Zolmitriptan?

Yes, Zomig is the branded name of the medicine Zolmitriptan. It’s part of a family of medicines called Triptans, which are used to ease the symptoms of a migraine attack or cluster headache. The medicine works the same way, no matter which brand name or packaging it has.

How Does Zomig Work?

Medical professionals aren’t entirely sure how Zomig works, but typically agree that it can reduce the widening of your blood vessels in your head, which may cause your migraine symptoms. This way, it stops the headache pain, as well as other migraine symptoms, like feeling or being sick, and the sensitivity you may experience to light and sound.

How To Use Zomig

It’s recommended that you take one Zomig 2.5mg tablet just as the migraine pain starts to happen. It has been shown to be less effective if you take it during the aura phase of a migraine. If your migraine is still there after two hours or comes back within 24 hours you can take another tablet.

Ingredients

The active substance is zolmitriptan. Each tablet contains 2.5 mg of zolmitriptan.

The other ingredients are hypromellose, lactose anhydrous, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, macrogol 400 and 8000, sodium starch glycollate, titanium dioxide (E171) and iron oxide (E172).

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Zomig can cause side effects. Common side effects you may experience include:

  • Abnormal sensations such as tingling in your fingers and toes or skin that is sensitive to touch
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Feeling sleepy, dizzy or warm
  • Feeling weak
  • Headache
  • Heaviness, tightness, pain or pressure in the throat, neck, arms and legs, or chest
  • Muscle weakness or muscle pain
  • Problems swallowing
  • Stomach pain
  • Uneven heart beat

Warnings

Zomig can interact with other medicines, so you should tell your prescriber if you take any other medications, including over-the-counter and herbal medicines.

Using Zomig more frequently than twice a week can increase your risk of developing medication overuse headaches, so you should speak to your prescriber about alternatives if you experience more than two migraines weekly.
