Whether you prefer tablets or liquid, both contain the active ingredient mebendazole. It’s this ingredient which prevents the threadworms from absorbing sugar – something they need to survive. It clears the infection and gets you and your family worm free fast.
You can treat an individual or your whole household at once which is often recommended since threadworms spread easily and you don’t want to risk reinfection.

Ovex Tablets and Suspension Summary
About Ovex Tablets and Suspension
Ovex is a simple, fast-acting anti-worm treatment that helps clear up threadworms for the whole family. It may also be used to treat other worm infections like whipworm, roundworm and hookworm.
You can take it as a tablet or go for the easy-to-swallow, banana-flavoured suspension which is great for little ones or anyone who prefers liquid medicine. It works by killing the worms and helping stop the infection from spreading, so you can get back to normal, itch-free life quickly. One dose is usually all you need to feel better.
How Does Ovex Tablets/Suspension Work?
Ovex belongs to a group of medicines known as anthelmintic. Basically it gets rid of worms.
Threadworms feed on sugar in your body to survive and multiply, but Ovex stops them from absorbing what they need. Without that fuel the worms normally die off and are passed out of your system after a few days.
Ovex only kills off adult worms, not eggs, so you need to practice really good hygiene with regular handwashing for at least six weeks after to prevent reinfection.
How To Take/Use Ovex Tablets/Suspension
Ovex is designed to treat the whole family (adults and children over two) with a single dose per person. If you opt for the tablets all you need to do is chew or swallow one tablet for it to start working. If you choose the suspension, take one 5ml dose of the liquid using the measuring cup provided.
If you’re reinfected our healthcare professionals may recommend you take a second dose after two weeks.
Ingredients
The active ingredient in Ovex is mebendazole – 100mg per 5ml of suspension or per tablet.
The other ingredients are in the suspension are sucrose, microcrystalline cellulose and carmellose sodium, methylcellulose, methylparahydroxybenzoate (E218), propylparahydroxybenzoate (E216), sodium laurilsulfate, banana flavour, (containing propylene glycol (E1520)), citric acid monohydrate and purified water.
The ingredients in the tablets are microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycollate, talc, maize starch, sodium saccharin, magnesium stearate, cottonseed oil – hydrogenated, orange flavour, colloidal anhydrous silica, sodium laurilsulfate and orange yellow S (E110).
Side Effects
As with any medication you may experience some side effects when taking Ovex though not everyone does. You may notice some mild stomach pain (One in 10) while a few people will get wind or diarrhoea (One in 100).
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived but if they persist or become more severe speak to one of our healthcare professionals or your GP.
For the full list of possible side effects see the Patient Information Leaflet. It is essential when purchasing Ovex that you read this leaflet thoroughly.
What If The Worms Are Still Moving
It can take up to 3 days for Ovex to kill mature threadworms and for them to be excreted in your stool.
If you continue to notice active worms in your stool a week after taking Ovex you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist as they may advise you to take a second dose after 2 weeks.
Warnings
Ovex is well tolerated in most adults and children, but you shouldn’t take it at the same time as certain antibiotics because this can cause severe skin reactions. You shouldn’t take it if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. The treatment is also not suitable for children under two.
If you’re intolerant to some sugars, taking Metronidazole, an antibiotic, or Cimetidine for excess stomach acid speak to our healthcare professionals first to make sure it’s the right treatment for you.
Ovex In Pregnancy And Breastfeeding
Ovex is not suitable for the treatment of worms in those that are pregnant or breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you believe you have worms or a household member currently has symptoms.
Please be aware this is not an exhaustive list of Warnings. For full details on Warnings and Precautions surrounding the administration of Ovex, please read the Patient Information Leaflet.
Ovex Tablets & Suspension reviews
How Does Ovex Work?
Threadworms might be tiny, but they can cause a lot of discomfort, especially that annoying itch around your bottom which is often worse at night. They also spread really easily, so if one person in your household has them, the chances are others do too.
That’s where Ovex can help. It’s designed to kill off the worms quickly and offer relief from itching fast. Threadworms rely on sugar from your body to reproduce. Ovex blocks their ability to absorb sugar, so they die and are flushed out of your system within a few days.
Even better, Ovex is suitable for the whole family and comes in tablet form or a banana-flavoured liquid. One dose is usually all that’s needed. Just remember to keep up good hygiene for at least six weeks after treatment. Ovex kills the worms but not their eggs, so regular handwashing is important to avoid reinfection.
How Quickly Does Ovex Get Rid Of Worms?
Ovex gets to work quickly killing threadworms with most of them passing out of your body in your poo within three days. You should start to feel more comfortable, with less itching, during that time.
One dose is usually enough but if you see live worms or symptoms return a week later you may need to repeat the treatment. Remember, Ovex doesn’t kill the eggs, so you’ll need to practise good hygiene for at least six weeks to prevent reinfection.
What Causes Threadworms?
Threadworms (also called pinworms) are tiny worms which are spread by ingesting microscopic eggs on contaminated surfaces like bedding, clothes, toys and furniture. They can be picked up by touching these surfaces then touching your mouth, which is why thorough handwashing after going to the toilet is essential.
The worms look like tiny pieces of white thread which you might notice in your poo. If your child has symptoms, you may see the worms around their bottom.
Why Does The Whole Family Need To Be Treated If One Person Has Threadworms?
Threadworms spread incredibly easy through bedding, toys, clothes and unwashed hands, so if one person has them it’s highly likely other people in your household do too, even if they’re not showing symptoms yet.
That’s why it’s recommended you treat everyone at the same time. It stops the spread and prevents reinfection. Alongside treatment, keeping on top of hygiene and handwashing for at least six weeks is essential to clear them for good.
Why Are There Different Types Of Ovex Treatment?
Ovex comes in two forms. These are an oral tablet or a banana-flavoured liquid. These options mean you can choose what’s best for your family. The tablets are great for older children and adults who are happy to swallow pills. The suspension is a good option for younger children or anyone who finds tablets tricky. Both contain the same active ingredient in the same amount so really, it’s a case of choosing what works best for your household.
Is Ovex Safe If You Are Pregnant Or Breastfeeding?
You shouldn’t take Ovex if you’re pregnant and breastfeeding. If you think you have threadworms or someone in your house does, then speak to one of our healthcare professionals or your GP for advice. They’ll talk to you about the different options and may suggest an alternative treatment which is safe for you to take.
Can I Take Repeat Doses If Threadworms Come Back?
Ovex is an effective treatment against threadworms so one dose should do the trick. If you still see live threadworms after more than a week, then you may need to take a second dose two weeks after the first.
It’s always best to speak to our healthcare professionals first to make sure it’s the best treatment for you. And always practice good hygiene during treatment and for six weeks after to reduce the chances of reinfection.
What Age Do Children Need To Be To Take Ovex?
Ovex is designed for adults and children over the age of two. The banana-flavoured suspension is an ideal option for young children who might struggle to swallow a tablet. For older children the tablet offers a convenient way to treat threadworms fast.
If your child is under two and you suspect they have threadworms speak to our healthcare professionals or your GP first. They will suggest the right treatment based on your child’s individual circumstances.
Do Worms Come Out Alive After Taking Ovex?
No, Ovex is effective in killing adult worms which are then passed out of your body in your poo. It’s very unlikely you’ll see any worms but if you do, they won’t be alive. However, it doesn’t kill the eggs, which is why it’s vital you practice good hygiene for at least six weeks after taking the treatment to prevent reinfection.
