Common Side Effects of GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections
GLP-1 medications can cause a range of side effects, which most commonly affect the digestive system. Symptoms like nausea, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea and acid reflux are especially common when you start treatment or increase your dose, as the drugs slow stomach emptying and change your appetite signals.
While these effects are usually temporary and improve over time, they can be uncomfortable, which is why we at The Independent Pharmacy have created this unique GLP-1 Side Effects Treatment Pack to support your symptoms and help you stay on track with your weight-loss.

Loperamide Capsules For GLP-1 Side Effects: Key Info
Loperamide capsules should be taken after a loose bowel movement to help slow the bowel and improve the absorption of water, salts and sugars from the gut.
The active ingredient, loperamide hydrochloride, works by reducing intestinal muscular contractions, slowing the movement of contents through the intestines. This allows more water to be absorbed, resulting in firmer stools and less frequent bowel movements.
Ingredients
Active ingredient: loperamide hydrochloride
Other ingredients: lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, maize starch, colloidal anhydrous silica, purified talc, magnesium stearate. The capsule is made up of gelatin, water, sodium lauryl sulfate, patent blue V (E131), quinoline yellow (E104), brilliant blue FCF (E133), iron oxide red (E172) and titanium dioxide (E171). The printing ink contains shellac (E904), propylene glycol (E1520), black iron oxide (E172) and potassium hydroxide (E525).
For the most up to date list of ingredients, please check the Patient Information Leaflet inside the box.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, loperamide can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Side effects can include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Wind
You are less likely to experience the following side effects, but they may still occur:
- Dizziness
- Abdominal pain
- Abdominal discomfort
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting

- Have AIDS and notice swelling in your stomach
- Have liver problems
Always follow your prescriber’s advice. For all warnings and side effects, please see the Patient Information Leaflet.

Senna For GLP-1 Side Effects: Key Info
Senna contains an active ingredient derived from the senna leaf and pods, which works as a stimulant laxative. When the large intestine muscles are sluggish, too much water is absorbed causing stools to become dry and hard, resulting in difficult bowel movements. Senna works by stimulating the nerves in the gut, helping to speed up bowel movements and making stools easier to pass.
Ingredients
Active ingredients: senna fruit equivalent to 7.5mg of sennoside B
Other ingredients: calcium phosphate, maize starch, lactose monohydrate and magnesium stearate.
For the most up to date list of ingredients, please check the Patient Information Leaflet inside the box.

- Stomach cramps
- Abdominal pain
Warnings
Always follow your prescriber’s advice. For all warnings and side effects, please see the Patient Information Leaflet.
FAQs
What are the downsides of GLP-1 weight loss injections?
GLP-1 weight loss injections, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, commonly cause gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation and acid reflux. These are usually temporary and improve as the body adjusts.
Other considerations include:
- Cost
- Weight regain after stopping treatment
- Rare but serious risks, such as pancreatitis or gallbladder problems
Support is available to help you manage common side effects and continue your treatment more comfortably.
Are GLP-1 side effects worse at first?
Yes, typically GLP-1 side effects are the most intense when you begin treatment or when you increase your dose. It can take your body a little bit of time to get used to the medication, which is why you’ll experience the side effects.
How to deal with GLP-1 side effects?
Our top tips for managing GLP-1 side effects are:
- Carefully following the dosage instructions
- Eating smaller, more frequent meals
- Choosing simple, easy-to-digest foods such as toast, rice, crackers or bananas, especially if you’re feeling nauseous
- Trying ginger or peppermint tea if you feel sick
- Avoiding high-fat, greasy or rich foods
- Avoiding high-sugar and fizzy drinks
- Staying hydrated by sipping water or hydration drinks through the day
- Avoiding skipping meals
- Using a GLP-1 Side Effects Treatment Pack to help you minimise the impact of side effects
Will GLP-1 side effects go away?
Typically, GLP-1 side effects will lessen as your body adjusts to the medication. Side effects should be better from about 8 weeks onwards.
Symptoms tend to improve over time but you may find that side effects increase if you over eat, or eat foods that exacerbate your symptoms, such as high-fat or rich foods.
Which GLP-1 has the least side effects?
There’s no completely side-effect-free GLP-1 option. Tolerance varies from person to person, so a medication that causes minimal side effects for one individual may not feel the same for another. Ultimately, how well you tolerate a GLP-1 will depend on your body’s response to the medication.
How do you manage semaglutide side effects?
Semaglutide side effects are most common when starting treatment or increasing your dose. They usually improve over time as your body adjusts.
To manage symptoms, it can help to:
- Increase your dose gradually, as advised by your prescriber
- Stay consistent with how and when you take your treatment
- Use supportive treatments to manage symptoms such as reflux, diarrhoea or constipation
- Speak to your prescriber if side effects persist or become difficult to manage
How do you manage Tirzepatide side effects?
If you have side effects from using tirzepatide, you could try managing them by:
- Staying hydrated as this will help with constipation, headaches and fatigue
- Eating smaller, frequent meals
- Avoiding greasy or spicy food
- Using a side effects pack, like our GLP-1 Side Effects Treatment Pack
How do you get rid of nausea on GLP-1?
Nausea is a common side effect of using GLP-1’s. It should reduce as your body gets used to the medication. Until then you can manage nausea by:
- Eating smaller portions, more slowly
- Avoiding high-fat meals
- Avoiding high-sugar, fizzy drinks
- Sticking to bland foods like crackers, rice, toast and bananas
- Staying hydrated
- Sipping ginger or peppermint tea
How long does a GLP-1 nausea last?
GLP-1 nausea typically lasts around 8 weeks as your body adjusts. You may find symptoms peak during dose increases. Most people find the side effects, including nausea, subside over time.
Who should not take a GLP-1?
You should not take any GLP-1 medication, such as Wegovy, Mounjaro or Ozempic, if you:
- Have a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2),
- Have history of pancreatitis
- Have severe gastrointestinal diseases, like gastroparesis
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
