Flutikaz Hay Fever Nasal Spray is a prescription-only medication that’s been designed to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, which is more commonly known as hay fever.
The main ingredient is a corticosteroid called fluticasone furoate that reduces swelling and irritation inside your nose. This helps to reduce hay fever symptoms like sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and watery or itchy eyes.
Every spray of Flutikaz contains 27.5 micrograms of the active ingredient and delivers it directly to your nasal passage to tackle symptoms at the source. It targets inflammation right where it is, and doesn’t impact the rest of your body like oral steroids might.
You might notice an improvement in symptoms within eight to 12 hours of use, but you’ll have to use it regularly for a few days to enjoy the maximum benefit of this treatment.

What is Flutikaz?
Flutikaz is a prescription-only corticosteroid nasal spray that treats hay fever and other allergic rhinitis. It helps to tackle sneezing, a runny nose, a blocked nose, and itchy or watery eyes by reducing swelling and irritation inside your nose. You use it once daily to relieve hay fever symptoms effectively throughout pollen season. It’s only suitable for adults.
How Does Flutikaz Work?
Flutikaz contains the corticosteroid fluticasone furoate. This active ingredient works to calm your body’s immune response to pollen. If you suffer from allergies, when you breathe in pollen, your body mistakes it for something dangerous and your immune system reacts by releasing chemicals including histamines. These cause inflammation in your nose and eyes. Flutikaz blocks the inflammation to reduce swelling, relieve irritation and make breathing easier.
How To Use Flutikaz
Our clinicians will tell you exactly how to use Flutikaz. You will typically start with two sprays in each nostril once a day. Once your symptoms are under control, you may drop down to one spray per nostril once daily.
You should always use the lowest effective dose of Flutikaz. This reduces the chance of side effects happening.

The active ingredient in Flutikaz is fluticasone furoate. Each spray contains 27.5 micrograms of this ingredient. Other ingredients in Flutikaz include glucose, microcrystalline cellulose, carmellose sodium, polysorbate 80, disodium edetate and benzalkonium chloride.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, Flutikaz could cause unwanted side effects. These are usually mild and go away by themselves after a while. The most commonly reported ones are nosebleeds, ulcers in your nose and headaches, but these are still fairly rare. You may also experience shortness of breath, or pain or discomfort in your nose. If you experience severe side effects or ones that get worse, seek immediate medical attention.
Warnings
One of the inactive ingredients in Flutikaz, benzalkonium chloride, can cause nasal irritation if you use it for long periods, so always follow your prescriber's advice. If you notice irritation, speak to a member of our clinical team so they can make adjustments.
If you’re pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding, you should discuss this with your clinician before using Flutikaz. There is limited evidence of how fluticasone furoate impacts pregnancy or breastfeeding in humans, so typically, you’ll only be prescribed it in these cases if the benefits far outweigh the potential risks.
What Causes Hay Fever Symptoms?
Hay fever (or seasonal allergies) happens when your body mistakes pollen for something dangerous. It reacts to the pollen and releases chemicals like histamines, which cause inflammation in your nose, throat and eyes. The types of pollen that you may be impacted by are different depending on the time of year. In spring, it’s usually tree pollen that’s causing you trouble, whereas in summer it’s more likely to be grass pollen. You might have weed pollen in late summer and autumn, causing your allergy symptoms. When the weather is dry and windy, symptoms can worsen because pollen can spread more easily.

That’s why it’s important to keep using it as prescribed each day of pollen season to keep your symptoms at bay. Even if you start to feel better, stopping taking the medication can allow the symptoms to come back.
Can Steroid Nasal Spray Cause Nosebleeds?
Yes, steroid nasal sprays can sometimes cause mild nosebleeds. This is more likely to happen if you use the spray for a long time or if it irritates the inside of your nose. These nosebleeds typically don’t last very long and aren’t too severe. If you experience frequent nosebleeds while using Flutikaz, or they become heavy, speak to a member of our clinical team. They may need to adjust your treatment.
Can Steroid Nasal Spray Cause Dizziness?
Dizziness is a rare side effect of steroid nasal sprays, but it can happen. If it does occur, it is usually mild and doesn’t last very long. If you experience this symptom, don’t drive or operate machinery until you feel better. If your dizziness keeps happening or gets worse, you need to tell one of our clinicians. Your treatment plan may need to be looked at and amended.
Will Taking Steroid Nasal Spray Affect My Contraception?
No, steroid nasal sprays like Flutikaz won’t affect the way your contraception works. Because you spray the medicine directly inside your nose, where you experience the symptoms, only very small amounts of the medicine reach your bloodstream. This means that it won’t prevent your hormonal contraception from working.
Can I Drink Alcohol While Using Hay Fever Nasal Spray?
Yes, you can drink alcohol while using Flutikaz. Research hasn’t shown any interactions between steroid nasal sprays and alcohol. But drinking heavily might make allergy symptoms worse, or just generally increase your tiredness, so you should always drink in moderation.
Do I Need A Steroid Card?
No, you don’t need a steroid card while taking Flutikaz. You’ll usually only need a steroid card if you’re using steroid tablets or injections at high doses for long periods. Because nasal sprays provide a very low dose, you won’t need a steroid card.
How Often Can I Use Hay Fever Spray?
You usually use hay fever spray once or twice a day, depending on what you’ve been advised by your prescriber. Never use more than your prescriber has told you to, as this won’t make your symptoms any better, but it can increase your chance of side effects.
