The low dose pill is a combined contraceptive pill containing both progesterone and oestrogen. The oestrogen level in a low dose pill is lower than that found in a regular combined contraceptive pill, hence the name. The oestrogen is reduced to lessen some of the uncomfortable side effects of the standard combined contraceptive pill such as breast tenderness. However the low dose pill does have a higher rate of irregular bleeding patterns than the standard contraceptive pill so it may not be suitable for everyone. The low dose pill is more often used by older women although younger women are not precluded from using it. The low dose pill is taken daily, some brands have a monthly break and some do not. Taken as prescribed, the low dose pill has a protection rate against unwanted pregnancy of 99%.

Loestrin is a monophasic twenty-one day contraceptive pill. Loestrin works by making it more difficult for the sperm to penetrate the womb, thereby reducing the chance of a fertilised egg implanting in the womb. If taken correctly, it is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can also have the additional benefit of helping to regulate periods; this is particularly useful for women who suffer with long and painful periods. Loestrin is available in different dosages, variously Loestrin 20 and Loestrin 30 both of which contain different amounts of norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol. The principal difference between them is that they contain different levels of the two hormones oestrogen and progesterone. Loestrin 20 is a slightly lower dose than Loestrin 30 and both tablets appear in different colours; Loestrin 30 is pale green and Loestrin 20 is pale blue.

  • Take a Loestrin pill on the first day of your period, this will provide you with immediate protection against pregnancy.
  • If you are unable to start Loestrin on the first day of your period, take your first tablet on the second to the fifth day of your period. This will not provide you with immediate protection against unwanted pregnancy and so you should continue to use another form of barrier contraception for the next seven days.
  • Loestrin should be taken regularly at roughly the same time every day.
  • There is a seven day pill free break after each pack.

Missed Pill Advice

If you have missed one pill, anywhere in the pack:

  • Take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • Continue taking the rest of the pack as usual
  • You don’t need to use additional contraception, such as condoms
  • Take your seven day pill-free break as normal.

However, if you have missed two or more pills (you are taking your pill more than 48 hours late) anywhere in the pack:

  • Take the last pill you missed now, even if it means taking two pills in one day
  • Leave any earlier missed pills
  • Continue taking the rest of the pack as usual and use an extra method of contraception for the next seven days
  • You may need emergency contraception
  • You may need to start the next pack of pills without a break.

Before using Loestrin 20 or Loestrin 30, read thoroughly all the product information and make sure your Doctor is aware of any other medication you are taking or may intend to start taking before you are prescribed this treatment.

Irregular bleeding also called spotting or breakthrough bleeding may occur when you start taking Loestrin but this usually settles within the first few months of use. If it persists beyond three months then you should consult your doctor.

The active ingredients in Loestrin are ethinylestradiol and norethisterone.

Loestrin 20 contains 1mg of norethindrone and 20mcg of ethinyl estradiol.

Loestrin 30 contains 1.5mg of norethindrone and 30mcg of ethinyl estradiol.

The contraceptive pill should not cause a harmful interaction with any of your other current medicines.  Some medicines can reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill including some antibiotics. Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of medicines that may affect your contraceptive pill.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What type of contraceptive pill is Loestrin?

Loestrin is a combined low dose contraceptive pill, it contains both of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone but the oestrogen level in Loestrin is lower than in the standard combined contraceptive pill.

  • How do I take Loestrin?

Loestrin should be taken as a daily pill with a seven day break after you have finished each pack. It is recommended that you take the pill at the same time each day, preferably at a time when it is easy for you to remember. Each slot in the blister pack has a designated day so it is easy to see where you are and to identify if you have missed a tablet

  • What should I do if I miss one Loestrin pill?

If you have missed one Loestrin pill, then you should take it as soon as you remember even if it means taking two pills in one day, unless it is close to the time when you are due to take your next pill. If it is nearer to the time that you are due to take your next pill, miss your forgotten pill completely and continue with the blister pack as normal. Missing one pill will not affect the efficacy of the medication and you will not need any additional contraceptive protection.

  • What should I do if I miss two or more Loestrin pills?

If you miss two or more Loestrin pills from the same pack, then you will have lost the benefit of contraceptive protection. You should therefore either refrain from sexual intercourse or use condoms for the next seven to nine days in order to protect against unwanted pregnancy. Take the last of the missed pills as soon as you remember it unless it is close to the time of your next pill. Do not take two pills in quick succession; this does not rectify the mistake. Ignore the pills that you have missed apart from the last one.

  • Does Loestrin protect against STI’s?

Loestrin does not protect you against any sexually transmitted infections. If you have had unprotected sexual intercourse and are worried you might have contracted an STI, you should discuss this with your doctor or visit a sexual health clinic.

  • What is the difference between Loestrin 20 and Loestrin 30?

Loestrin 20 and Loestrin 30 contain different levels of the two hormones oestrogen and progesterone; Loestrin 20 is a slightly lower dose. Both tablets appear in different colours; Loestrin 20 is pale blue and Loestrin 30 is pale green.
