Rhinolast nasal spray contains the antihistamine Azelastine hydrochloride. Antihistamines are designed to provide relief from the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. These symptoms include; congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose. Azelastine hydrochloride has proven effective against allergies to pollens (hay fever), as well as allergies to household irritants, such as dust mites and animal dander.
Allergic rhinitis occurs as a result of a hypersensitive immune system. When an allergen enters the nose, the immune system attacks it, mistaking the allergen for something more serious, such as an infection. This will trigger an immune response, which causes the body to produce extra mucus. This will lead to symptoms that include; congestion and sneezing. Allergic rhinitis is a very common condition. In The UK alone, it affects approximately 20% of people. It is not fully understood why these allergies develop. However, sometimes they run in families.
When the body overreacts to an allergen, it releases a chemical called histamine. Histamine will cause inflammation in the nasal passages. Rhinolast spray will provide antihistamine relief for approximately 12 hours. However, if your allergic rhinitis is caused severe inflammation, Rhinolast may take a few days to reach its full effect.
Another nasal spray used to treat allergic rhinitis is Dymista. Dymista contains both an antihistamine and a corticosteroid. Do not use Rhinolast and Dymista at the same time, as you will exceed the recommended dose of antihistamine.
There are some non-medicinal methods to help combat hay fever symptoms. Some of these may include:
There is an extremely large range of OTC (over the counter) products you can purchase in any pharmacy, these vary from tablets to nasal sprays and also eye drops. You should try these before moving onto a prescription only medicine.
Gently shake the bottle. If using the bottle for the first time, prime it by spraying it away from you until it releases a fine mist. Spray once per nostril.
If the medicine has passed its expiry date, or if the bottle has been open for more than six months, do not use it. If you still require Rhinolast, ask your doctor for a new prescription. This is to ensure that the solution remains sterile.
Store Rhinolast out of the reach of children.
Not everyone will experience side effects when they take Rhinolast.
The taste can be quite unpleasant. This may cause you to feel nauseous, though this is uncommon.
If you are concerned about these effects, or if the product affects you in any other way, stop using it and talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
