Zolmitriptan Summary Table

Zolmitriptan Orodispersible 2.5mg and 5mg Tablets Information

How Do Zolmitriptan 2.5mg and 5mg Tablets Work?

During a migraine, the blood vessels in the brain can widen and contribute to pain and other symptoms. Zolmitriptan works by helping those blood vessels return to their normal size, which relieves the headache, as well as symptoms like nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.

Who Can Use Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets?

Zolmitriptan is usually used in adults aged 18 to 65 who have been diagnosed with migraines. Using Zolmitriptan too often can cause medication overuse headache, so your prescriber will advise how frequently you should take it.

Who Should Not Use Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets?

You shouldn’t use Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or have a history of:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart problems, such as heart attack or angina
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Stroke

If you’re currently taking other migraine treatments or certain other medications, you should avoid using Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets. Speak to your prescriber before use.

Alternatives to Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets?

Zolmitriptan is also available as a standard tablet that you take with water. If Zolmitriptan is not suitable for you, your prescriber may suggest other prescription triptan medicines, such as sumatriptan or rizatriptan, or non-triptan migraine relief, such as NSAIDs or paracetamol. If your attacks are frequent, you may also be offered preventive migraine medicines, which need to be discussed with your GP. You can also explore over-the-counter migraine relief to help manage occasional attacks.

How to Take Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets

You should take Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets as soon as your migraine starts, or as soon as possible after the attack begins. Place one tablet on your tongue and let it dissolve. You don’t need to swallow it with water. If your symptoms return, you may take another dose at least two hours later. Do not take more than two doses in a 24-hour period.

Never take Zolmitriptan alongside other migraine medicines, such as ergotamine or triptans. You should also avoid combining it with certain antidepressants, such as SSRIs or SNRIs, which affect serotonin levels. Speak to your prescriber about possible drug interactions.
