About Soolantra (Ivermectin)

The active ingredient in Soolantra is Ivermectin, which belongs to a group of medications called Avermectins. Ivermectin is an anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic agent targeting Demodex mites, which live on your face in your hair follicles. You apply the cream to the skin on your face to treat the pimples, spots and redness associated with rosacea. It can be used in adults over the age of 18.

How Does Soolantra 45mg Cream Work?

Soolantra contains Ivermectin, which tackles the root cause of rosacea by reducing the number of a type of mite called Demodex mites, that live on your skin. It’s thought that having a high number of these Demodex folliculorum mites is linked to the inflammation you get when you have rosacea. By killing these mites, Soolantra may reduce the inflammation and inflammatory lesions of rosacea, clearing and calming your skin.

Soolantra Alternatives

Here are some of the common alternatives to Soolantra cream for treating rosacea:

  • Rozex gel contains the antibiotic metronidazole, an effective topical treatment for acne rosacea. However, it may cause skin irritation, and you will need to avoid alcohol while using it. Metronidazole tablets are also used for BV.
  • Finacea gel helps to treat the spots and pimples associated with rosacea but is less effective at treating redness. It isn’t recommended for people with asthma.
  • Dermalex Rosacea Cream is an over-the-counter rosacea treatment to help with redness and spider veins. It repairs and strengthens the skin’s barrier function, creating a protective film for daily support against external triggers.

What are the ingredients in Soolantra?

Soolantra 10 mg/g cream contains the active ingredient Ivermectin. Each gram of cream includes 10 mg of Ivermectin. This is the ingredient that treats rosacea. The other ingredients in Soolantra include glycerol, isopropyl palmitate, carbomer, dimeticone, disodium edetate, citric acid monohydrate, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, macrogol cetostearyl ether, sorbitan stearate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, oleyl alcohol, sodium hydroxide, and purified water. These all work together to allow the Ivermectin to be effective.

Side Effects

As with all medications, Soolantra may cause side effects. Not everyone gets them, and many people only experience mild side effects. Because Soolantra is a topical medicine, meaning that you apply it directly to your skin, most of the side effects are skin-related. Common side effects include a burning sensation, itching sensation, skin irritation or dry skin. These are usually mild and get better by themselves after a little while. In rare cases, you may experience swelling of the face or liver enzyme elevations. These side effects require medical attention.
