What are Levitra tablets?

Levitra tablets are an erectile dysfunction treatment that contain the active ingredient vardenafil. The trading rights for vardenafil are owned by German company Bayer Pharmaceuticals; it is sold as Staxyn in India, and Vivanza in Italy. As of July 2019, there is a generic version of Levitra available called Vardenafil tablets, which are available in 5mg, 10mg & 20mg strengths.

Levitra tablets are a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor which help to increase the normal flow of blood to your penis. They have been shown to be effective at treating men over 50 and people suffering from health risks like high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes, who may not be able to take other ED pills as a consequence.

What are the main causes of ED?

ED (impotence) is often caused by anxiety, stress, tiredness, smoking, or excessive consumption of alcohol. However, the NHS have noted that there are also a number of physical causes for ED. Among these are:

  • Hormone problems
  • High cholesterol level
  • Narrowing of the blood vessels in your penis
  • Being overweight

The NHS have noted that ED can also be an early indication of more serious health conditions, such as:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

If you are experiencing symptoms of ED it is important to seek advice from your GP, or a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic, as they will be able to advise what the best course of action is for you.

You can read more about the causes of erectile dysfunction here.

How do Levitra tablets treat my ED?

Levitra tablets are a medicine which is designed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). The tablets contain the active ingredient vardenafil hydrochloride which increases blood flow to the penis. Together with sexual stimulation, the increased blood flow will help you to achieve and maintain a satisfactory erection to have sexual intercourse.

How long do Levitra tablets last for?

Levitra is available in 3 strengths: 5mg tablets, 10mg tablets, and 20mg tablets. Each strength works after about 30 minutes and is effective for up to 10 hours. Your doctor will be able to help you choose the correct Levitra dosage, although the starting dose for most men is Levitra 10mg tablets.

You can read more about Levitra and how to make it more effective here.

Who can prescribe Levitra tablets?

Use of Levitra requires a doctor’s prescription. Our discreet and fast service allows you to obtain both a prescription and the medication without a doctor’s visit. We will ask you to complete a brief questionnaire, where you can indicate a preferred treatment. Our online doctor will check your medical history and suggest an appropriate treatment.

Levitra tablets are available from The Independent Pharmacy, following a free consultation with one of our UK-registered healthcare professionals. Levitra tablets are not available over the counter in your local pharmacy.

Levitra vs Viagra, Cialis, or Spedra — which one should I use?

The best ED medicine for you will depend on your physical condition and personal requirements. Levitra, Viagra, Cialis, and Spedra are among the most popular treatments for ED. Their benefits are:

  • Levitra – This is more effective than other ED at treating men over 50
  • Viagra –  Fast acting, this will allow you to sustain an erection for 4-5 hours
  • Cialis –   Long-lasting, this gives you the ability to achieve an erection over an extended period of time – up to 36 hours
  • Spedra – One of the fastest ED treatments available, this will take effect after 20 minutes and lasts for up to 5 hours

Here’s a guide that looks at Levitra vs Viagra and other ED medicines in more detail.

Are there non-prescription alternatives to Levitra?

There are a number of non-prescription alternatives for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction such as:

  • Changes to diet (cutting down alcohol and fat consumption)
  • Exercise
  • Stopping smoking
  • Reducing stress
  • Counselling
  • Vacuum devices (penis pumps)

To learn more about erectile dysfunction and available treatments, visit our Erectile Dysfunction page.

Pharmacist Tip

Eat a balanced diet: regular consumption of fatty foods will cause weight gain and contribute to blocked arteries, which reduces blood flow to your penis.

Reduce alcohol consumption: Alcohol depresses the central nervous system, making it harder for you to achieve an erection.

User reviews of Levitra

Reviews from people who use Levitra describe the treatment as being very effective, while reiterating that its speed — the tablets take effect within 30 minutes.

Users have flagged the impact of tiredness on the effectiveness of Levitra, with a number of reviewers suggesting that you may not want to take medication after a long day.

  • Levitra can take up to an hour to take effect in some men, although it can take effect in as little as 15 – 20 minutes in some men.
  • Levitra can produce an effect for up to 4 – 5 hours, although occasionally it can last longer.
  • You should never take more than tablet for erectile dysfunction (Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra) in a 24-hour period.
  • You should take Levitra on an empty stomach or after a light meal and try to limit your alcohol intake to ensure it remains effective.
Levitra does not always work for everyone the first time they use it. If this is the case you should not give up, guidance states that you should try Levitra at least 8 times. If you find Levitra effective and do not experience any serious side effects you can request a repeat order via your online account. If you followed the above guidance and still find Levitra ineffective you may wish to increase the strength, or alternatively try a different medicine such as Cialis or Viagra.

If you do experience side effects from Levitra they may include headache, flushing, and nasal congestion. Levitra has a small risk of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and skin rash as with all medicines. Please read the Patient Information Leaflet enclosed with your medicines for a full list of side effects.

Read more about Levitra side effects here.

If you experience any adverse effects from taking your prescribed medicine it is important to let us know immediately. Levitra tablets are manufactured by Bayer. The tablets are orange in colour and round in shape. Levitra is a film-coated with “BAYER” cross marked on one side and “10” marked on the other. Levitra 10mg tablets come in blisters of 4 tablets. There is a marking of 5 on the 5mg tablets and the 20 on the 20mg tablets respectively.

In addition to the active ingredient, Vardenafil, Levitra tablets also contains microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, crospovidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and yellow & red ferric oxide.

Levitra tablets may not be suitable if any of the following apply:

  • You suffer from heart disease or heart rhythm problems
  • You have had a heart attack or stroke within the last six months
  • You have high or low blood pressure
  • You suffer from liver or kidney disease
  • You are a haemophiliac
  • You suffer from sickle cell anaemia or leukaemia
  • There is a physical deformity of the penis
  • You suffer from retinitis pigmentosa
  • You have a stomach ulcer.

If any of the above apply, it is important to let your prescriber know so they can judge whether Levitra tablets will be safe for you to use.

Levitra tablets can slightly lower the blood pressure. For most men this isn’t a concern. However, this effect on blood pressure can be exaggerated if Levitra is taken with a nitrate drug, such as Isosorbide or Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN). If taking nitrate drugs then Levitra tablets should not be used. Levitra tablets should be used in caution if combined with alpha blockers due to the potential hypotensive effects.

Levitra Tablets (5mg, 10mg & 20mg) Reviews

Unsure about a treatment?
Ask our medical team for impartial information and advice about any treatment we provide or medical condition that we treat before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need to take Levitra with food?

You can take Levitra tablets with or without food. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol prior to taking Levitra is not recommended. Large quantities of alcohol can make it difficult to achieve an erection but small to moderate alcohol consumption is unlikely to interfere.

  • What are the key benefits of Levitra?

In clinical studies, Levitra has been proven effective for a wide range of age groups (18 - 89 years) and in men with other conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart and lung problems, high cholesterol and depression. Levitra was proven to increase erection maintenance and successful penetration.

  • Is Levitra right for me, or would Cialis be better?

You should only take Levitra if it has been prescribed by a registered doctor. Men with severe cardiac disease, unstable angina or angina occurring during sexual activity, low blood pressure or have had a recent heart attack or stroke should not take Levitra.

Treatments for erectile dysfunction may not be effective for men with deformity of the penis such an angulation and bent penis. Levitra can also be dangerous when combined with other medicines such as alpha blockers, ketoconazole and itraconazole. You should also avoid HIV medications such as ritonavir and indinavir while taking Levitra. Some antibiotics can also affect this medication.

Levitra can be more effective for men aged over 50 or those who have other health conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

Here’s a guide that looks at Levitra vs Viagra and other ED medicines in more detail.

  • What other erectile dysfunction treatments are there?

Levitra or vardenafil, is similar to sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and avanafil (Spedra). Levitra has a slight molecular difference to Viagra/sildenafil, giving it a longer effect.

The Independent Pharmacy also supplies Vitaros cream, a non-tablet treatment for ED.

  • Why should I choose Levitra?

Levitra can remain effective for 12 hours or longer. While erections will not be continuous during this period, they are likely to be improved with arousal during those 12 hours.

  • Does Levitra work every time?

PDE5 inhibitors are usually steady and predictable. Generally, if Levitra has worked before, it’s going to work every time.

If your erectile dysfunction is psychological, you may require specialist treatment.

Erectile dysfunction can also indicate serious health conditions such as atherosclerosis and heart disease. You should consult your doctor about any erectile performance trouble.

  • Who should not take Levitra?

Levitra should be avoided by men with a history of angina, recent stroke or heart attack, high or low blood pressure and a range of less common medical conditions. There is no age limit for the use of Levitra.

Some medications interact with Levitra, particularly nitrates. Levitra in combination with nitrates can result in low blood pressure.

  • Is Cialis stronger than Levitra?

No, Cialis works in the same way as Levitra, but its effects last for up to 36 hours. Levitra is most effective when sexual activity occurs within 12 hours of taking a tablet. Erections will only occur with arousal.

  • Why does the cost of Levitra vary so much?

The wholesale price is set by the manufacturing drug company, Bayer, so pharmacies usually pay the same price for Levitra. Pharmacies then set their own prices for drugs depending on their business model. The Independent Pharmacy keeps prices lower and benefits from high levels of repeat ordering.

  • Can I take Levitra with other ED tablets?

No, taking a combination of other ED tablets will not produce stronger erections and will increase your risk for side effects. Allow 24 hours between taking Levitra and a different ED medicine. Wait for 48 hours after taking Cialis.

  • How long does Levitra work and how frequently can I take it?

Levitra remains active for 12 hours. Wait 24 hours before taking another tablet.

  • Can I drink alcohol with Levitra?

You can drink 1 to 2 units of alcohol with Levitra. Keep in mind that Alcohol is a depressant and reduces the strength of erections. This can counteract the effect of medications taken to treat ED. Additionally, any more than small amounts of alcohol may increase some of Levitra’s side effects, especially low blood pressure.

  • Can I take Levitra with other prescription medicines?

You can take Levitra with most prescription medicines. However there are a number of prescription medicines which interact with Levitra, most notable are nitrates used to treat heart disease and angina. During online consultations, we will check for medications that interact. You can read the full list of medications that interact with Levira in the patient information leaflet supplied with the tablets.

  • Will Levitra cause unwanted erections?

No, Levitra and the other common ED medications support natural erections. After taking the tablet, sexual arousal and stimulation need to be present before an erection will occur. Without this stimulation Levitra remains inactive.

  • Can I break Levitra tablets into smaller pieces and take split tablets?

No, Levitra tablets are film-coated and should not be split. Breaking the film coat will reduce their effectiveness.

  • Do I need a prescription for Levitra, or can I buy it without?

Levitra is available by prescription only. Doctors or specialist pharmacists can prescribe it and it must be dispensed by a registered pharmacy. Online clinics supply Levitra through electronic prescriptions.

  • Can I get Levitra on the NHS?

GPs and NHS specialists can prescribe limited amounts and on a strict eligibility basis on the NHS. NHS prescription fees apply.

  • Is Levitra cheaper online, or through a private doctor?

Most private doctors charge at least £25.00 for a prescription. NHS doctors also charge for writing private prescriptions. In general, online services are cheaper but costs can vary and it is worth some research. Be sure to use only fully regulated websites.

  • What should I do if Levitra does not work or stops working?

Levitra is usually an effective treatment and works consistently each time. The same dose should work over a period of years. The body does not build a tolerance to Levitra and they should not become less effective. However, in the situation where the tablet is not taken properly, the results may be disappointing. In this case, it is best to try the same dose again. Only increase your dose if the previous dose has not worked on several occasions. If you response to Levitra continues to be poor, consult your doctor. There may have been a progression in the underlying cause of the ED or some other new factor may need to be examined.

  • What is Levitra oro-dispersible?

Oro-dispersible tablets dissolve on your tongue and are rapidly absorbed for faster effect.

Place an oro-dispersible tablet on the tongue, allow it to dissolve, then swallow. The oro-dispersible tablets must be taken without liquid and immediately upon release from the blister.

Levitra is available as an oro-dispersible tablet for men who struggle to swallow normal tablets.

  • What are the myths about Levitra?

Levitra will not increase a man’s sex drive but will help him achieve an erection when he is sexually stimulated. Levitra is not a contraceptive and does not protect partners from STI’s (sexually transmitted infections). For these reasons, it is important to use birth control and/or a condom.

  • Should I take more Levitra if I’m dissatisfied with the results?

Do not take more than the recommended dose of Levitra. Also, do not take an alternative treatment such as Viagra or Cialis within 24 hours of taking Levitra. The best solution is to consult your doctor if you are dissatisfied with your treatment. He or she may be able to increase the dosage or suggest an alternative treatment.

  • Can I take Levitra if I have diabetes?

Yes. Levitra has been proven effective for people who have diabetes. Consult your doctor for more information and be sure to disclose your full medical history prior to receiving a prescription for erectile dysfunction.

  • Who can take Levitra?

Levitra can be taken by men over 18. However, you should consult a doctor about your ED and attempt to examine the causes of your disorder. For older men, these tend to be physical; for younger men they are often psychological. Other medications and your overall health may affect whether you can take Levitra safely; consult your doctor and the list of warnings below.

  • What should my Levitra pills look like?

Levitra pills are round and orange printed with “BAYER” on one side and the dosage other.

  • How safe is Levitra?

Like all prescription medication, Levitra has been subjected to rigorous testing and clinical trials by medical agencies before being granted a license.

Levitra is safe, provided a qualified doctor has approved its use and prescribed it after taking into consideration the symptoms of your condition, other medications you take, and underlying health issues.

Only buy Levitra from a registered pharmacy which requires a prescription to process your order.

  • I’ve not heard of Levitra. Why should I take it instead of Viagra?

While they have different active ingredients, Levitra and Viagra work in a similar way. Viagra may work better for some people, while Levitra will be more appropriate for others. Your doctor will be able help you decide which is the best treatment for you.

Levitra can become effective more quickly and is thought to last slightly longer than Viagra; it is also more suitable for men with some underlying medical conditions.

A key advantage for those who buy Levitra is that it is available in an oro-dispersible form, which means it can be placed on the tongue and dissolved. In this way, patients can take it more discreetly.

  • Can women take Levitra?

No. Levitra is not suitable for use by women under any circumstance.

  • Can I buy Levitra online?

Yes. You can buy Levitra through online pharmacies, without seeing a doctor beforehand. The pharmacy will provide a remote consultation service with a doctor who will assesses your condition through a medical questionnaire.

Pharmacy websites offering this service still need to adhere to certain guidelines to ensure the patient’s safety. They will need to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (the GPhC) and bear this logo on their platform:

Legitimate pharmacies must also display contact details, such as a phone number and an address. If the site does not have this information, treat it with suspicion.

Furthermore, any website offering to sell Levitra without a prescription is operating illegally and should be avoided. As stated above, Levitra is a prescription-only medicine, and cannot be issued without the patient first undergoing a screening.

  • Where can I read reviews of Levitra?

We’ve compiled reviews of Levitra from various sources on this information page.

  • Can I take Levitra at the same time as my other medication?

It’s extremely important to inform your doctor about any prescription or nonprescription medication you are currently using before they prescribe you with this medication. He or she will be able to inform you about any interactions that could be problematic.

  • Can I drink grapefruit juice while taking Levitra?

You should not drink grapefruit juice while taking Levitra. It contains furanocoumarins, chemicals which can affect how the medicine is broken down in the body and might impede the effects of this treatment.

  • What can I do if Levitra doesn’t work for me?

If you find that Levitra is not producing adequate results, consult your doctor. He or she will adjust your dose, or suggest alternative treatments.

  • Is it safe to buy Levitra online?

Yes, as long as you buy it from a registered online pharmacy. It should be registered with General Pharmaceutical Council, and the website should carry their logo.

Do not purchase Levitra from any website that offers to sell it without a prescription. These sellers are operating illegally and their products may be counterfeit and dangerous.

  • Why is Levitra not available OTC (over-the-counter)?

Levitra is a prescription-only medication. To buy Levitra, patients will always need to be evaluated by a physician who can assess the medicine’s suitability, and safety prior to writing a prescription

Levitra may cause a sensitivity reaction in some users with certain medical conditions, such as angina or liver or kidney disease. It may also interact with other treatments. Part of your medical consultation will involve screening for these conditions and possible interactions.

The physician and pharmacist will also check that your Levitra dosage is appropriate and that you know how to take the medication.

In the UK, there is no licensed medical treatment for erectile dysfunction available over the counter. Levitra and other PDE5 inhibitors require prior consultation with a doctor.

  • Will a higher dose give me a better result?

    Not necessarily.

The typical starting dose is 10mg. This dose allows your doctor to assess the drug’s efficacy and how well your body tolerates it. Your doctor may adjust your dosage strength depending on these factors.

Consult your doctor if your Levitra dose does not provide successful results. He or she may make adjustments to the dose or change your ED medication altogether.

Do not alter your dose without your doctor’s prior approval.

  • What are the advantages of Levitra 10mg oro-dispersible tablets?

    • Levitra ODT is not taken with liquid. This allows those who use it discretion with when and how they take it.
    • Fast acting: The tablet can be taken 25-60 minutes prior to sexual activity.
    • Effective absorption: Levitra ODT dissolves on the tongue which allows for quick absorption and avoids stomach irritation.
    • Available in the median dose: Levitra ODT is only available as a 10mg dose. All medications can cause unwanted side effects, however, during clinical trials those associated with Levitra ODT were considered mostly mild or moderate.
  • How do I get a Levitra oro-dispersible prescription?

If you have erectile dysfunction and want to learn if Levitra ODT the right treatment for you, then you should speak to a doctor.

Our online consultation service allows you to have your condition assessed remotely by a doctor, who will prescribe you regular Levitra tablets if the treatment is suitable. You should see your GP for Levitra orodispersible tablets.

  • Viagra didn’t work for me, will Levitra?

It may. Since Levitra is less affected by food or alcohol intake, it could give you better results. However, the drugs work in similar ways so they tend to have similar levels of effectiveness.
