Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between Estradot and Evorel?

Evorel and Estradot are both brands of HRT patches available in the UK. Both contain estradiol, however, Evorel are larger in size. If you are sensitive to soy, you may be better off with Evorel than Estradot.

  • Can you drink alcohol while taking Utovlan?

There are no known risks associated with consuming alcohol when taking Utovlan. But as always, it’s important to drink responsibly.

  • How Quickly Does Tranexamic Acid Start Working?

Tranexamic Acid should work pretty quickly, especially if you take it at the first sign of unwanted bleeding. Most people notice a reduction in bleeding a few hours after taking it. Depending on the reason you’re taking it, you may see a difference the same day your treatment starts, especially if you’re using it after surgery. It works by helping your blood to clot properly, which helps reduce or stop unwanted bleeding.

The exact speed at which Tranexamic Acid works depends on a variety of factors, including the reason you’re taking it, the dose you’re taking, and how your body responds to the medicine.

If you don’t see an improvement in your bleeding after a couple of days of taking Tranexamic Acid, or if your symptoms get worse, you should seek medical advice. Never take additional medicine unless your prescriber advises you to.

  • Does Vagifem Cause Weight Gain?

There are some rumours that taking Vagifem could cause you to gain weight. However, there is currently no strong evidence to link Vagifem to weight gain, particularly when compared to systemic HRT treatment.

Some studies suggest that you may temporarily experience some fluid retention while taking Vagifem, but that this usually improves within three months. If you have any concerns about weight gain while taking Vagifem, always speak to your prescribing clinician.

  • Can I take Metronidazole and drink alcohol?

Do not drink any alcohol while taking Metronidazole. This is a well documented interaction that can cause vomiting, flushing or an increased heart rate. This advice also applies to items that contain alcohol like mouthwash. Allow 2 days for any trace of the antibiotic to clear out of your system before consuming any alcohol or alcohol containing products.

  • What is the difference between Canesten Cream 1% and Canesten Thrush Cream?

Canesten Cream 1% contains clotrimazole in a 1% formulation. Whereas Canesten Thrush Cream contains clotrimazole in a 2% formulation. These strengths are important to consider as you should not use the 2% thrush cream for fungal skin infections or vice versa.

  • What Is Trimethoprim Used For?

Trimethoprim is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections. While it can be used for respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, it is commonly prescribed to treat and prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as cystitis. These are caused by bacteria entering your urinary tract, resulting in an inflammation of your bladder that causes a stinging, burning or painful sensation when urinating, abdominal pain or bloody urine.

Trimethoprim works by preventing the bacteria that cause UTIs from being able to reproduce, making it easier for your body's immune system to combat the infection.

  • How often can you take EllaOne?

EllaOne can only be taken once per cycle. If you need to take more than one emergency contraceptive in a single cycle, Levonelle is a more appropriate option.

  • What is the difference between EllaOne and Levonelle?

At The Independent Pharmacy we can supply two different single-dose emergency contraception tablets; EllaOne and Levonelle.

    Mechanism of action

Levonelle is a synthetic substitute of the female hormone progesterone. It can be taken up to 3 days after unprotected sexualintercourse and the exact mechanism of how it works is not known. Depending on where you are in your cycle it is thought to prevent ovulation, fertilisation or implantation.

EllaOne also works on the progesterone hormone but it modifies it to prevent ovulation from taking place.

    Effectiveness

With Levonelle the longer treatment is delayed after unprotected sex the less effective it becomes. If taken 24 hours after sex it is 98% effective, this drops to 85% after 48 hours and drops further to 58% up to 72 hours.

EllaOne can be taken up to 5 days after a sexual episode and is 98% effective up to 120 hours after unprotected sex.

Levonelle is not as effective in preventing pregnancy in larger women (ones who have a high Body Mass Index). EllaOne is more effective and is recommended in these cases.

    Side effects (sickness)

If you are physically sick up to 2 hours after of taking Levonelle you need a replacement tablet.

A replacement is needed if you vomit up to 3 hours after taking EllaOne.

    Multiple Uses

If needed Levonelle can be used more than once in a single menstrual cycle.

EllaOne can only be used once per cycle.
